There are a few things you can do to avoid highways on Google Maps. First, make sure you’re using the “Street View” mode when mapping. This will show you the roads and intersections in detail, which will help you avoid them. Second, be aware of the “Highways” tab in the map settings. This tab shows all of the major highways that run through your area, and it can be helpful to see which ones are being used most often. Finally, try to use public transportation instead of driving if possible. Many cities have public transportation that’s much cheaper and easier to use than driving.

Are you heading somewhere and would prefer a route that does not include highways? If so, ask Google Maps to exclude all the highways from your driving directions. It’s as simple as checking a box.
